10 wagonów (2 składy po 5). Wagony czołowe mieszczą według oficjalnej normy 176, a środkowe 188 osób.
A jakie czestotliwosci?
10-car trains are only on the old IRT system - first in the city - because cars are shorter (see photos - 3 doors instead of four).
The other two systems - BMT and IND - operate 8-car trainsets (four doubles for older models).
IRT and BMT/IND systems are NOT connected - no numbered (1-9 - IRT) and lettered (A-Z - BMT/IND) trains can share the same track.
Thank you for your comment. What did cause the change of the cars length?
Some facts about NY Subway:
1. First was an IRT (Interborough Rapid Transit) which originally ran only in Manhattan (Battery Park to Harlem) and then expanded to Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens (line 7). It pioneered express track and had a 3-door cars to negotiate tight turns in downtown Manhattan.
2. Next was a BMT (Brookyn-Manhattan Transit) which had a straighter track than IRT and could operate 4-door cars.
3. Finally there was an IND (Independent) which ran the same stock as BMT. Later there were some connectors built between BMT and IND networks, but to this day all three systems are largely independent track-wise.
4. Some trivia facts:
a. With the exception of shuttles and Staten Island Rapid Transit (organizationally a part of the MTA) no subway line runs through only one borough.
b. No Subway lines run through 4 boroughs.
@OMF: unfortunately, but your information on train lengths is not true anymore. 10-car sets operate also on BMT/IND routes, specifically E, F, N, and Q.
It's also important to notice that IRT built the first undeground section (1904), however, elevated railways began to operate as early as in 1869. The oldest section of the current system - between Gates and Van Sinclen on the J/Z train route - was opened in 1885. The company chronology is correct, but these were just organizational changes, e.g. BMT took over the lines operated previously by another company (which went bankrupt); many of BMT lines were running before the incorporation of IRT.
I know about elevated lines, I was talking only about subway. As far as 10-car sets on BMT lines - that's true only for the newest cars without intermediate cabs (60-footers). Old 75-footers could only be coupled in 8-car sets.
Too bad you didn't contact me when in New York. I'm only an hour drive from the City, we could've had a nice trip around. Next time e-mail me - vzykin@yahoo.com.
